Welcome to Must Love Memoir, a space for all things creative nonfiction. The idea launched as a monthly NYC based reading series in June of 2023, born out of a deep love of memoir and personal stories. Heading into it’s second year, the series has hosted a number of nonfiction authors such as Elissa Bassist, Felice Cohen, Dionne Ford, Shenequa A. Golding, Jennifer Michael Hecht, Kelly McMasters, Hyeseung Song, Nikki Vargas, Jane Wong, and many more.
We should be friends.
This space is really about building community.
In my experience, before I received my MFA in Creative Writing, it was really difficult to know how to even begin building a writing community–which is so important in navigating any creative space. I had no idea where or how to make the kinds of connections that would build authentic relationships with other aspiring writers.
The only thing that did that for me was forcing myself into workshops, sharing my writing with others, hearing their thoughts on my work, and finding the voices that really resonated with me. I aim to bring that same environment here and help you find your writing community.
Despite the name Must Love Memoir, there is no real prerequisite to be here. So whatever brought you to this space, I hope you’ll stick around and follow me deeper into a love of memoir. If you’re just starting out with the genre, maybe even with a little trepidation, I hope you’ll gain a little more appreciation and respect for what goes into writing nonfiction.
If you are a seasoned memoirist or someone who has been dabbling in creative nonfiction for years—whether that’s manifested itself in a long list of published essay, a book, or even just notebooks full of journal entries—it is my hope you will find something new here. To re-spark your love and passion for this genre.
