Scene from an upstate CCNY student and alumni writing retreat I attended a few weeks ago.

Hello dear memoir lovers,

It seems to be a trend for myself, and other writers I know, that the fall is just busy. School is in session and while I’m no longer a student, as a teacher, I am still at the mercy of assignment due dates and public academia bureaucracy. A thing that tends to keep my mind full of noise.

This also tends to make it even more difficult than usual to carve out significant time for writing. Which is why Hope and I felt like it was time to start up virtual write-ins again—to help carve out time for ourselves and this community to write together.

We’ll be conducting these every other Sunday through the end of the year, so join us on Zoom if you just need a little nudge to write something today.

Also, this is your friendly reminder that we are currently open for submissions to annual members until October 31. Plus, annual subscriptions are 50% off for the entire month, so now is a perfect time to get more involved in this community.

Read all about the submission process here.

Hope and I at KGB bar, where I read a few weeks ago with NYC Writer’s Circle. It’s so important to have writer friends who come out and support you when you do new and scary things, and I have such a great friend and co-host in Hope.

Mark your calendars for the other upcoming write-ins!

  1. Sunday, October 27 at 5:30pm EST

  2. Sunday, November 10 at 5:30pm EST

  3. Sunday, November 24 at 5:30pm EST

  4. Sunday, December 8 at 5:30pm EST

What we’ll do during our write-in:

  1. Get into your favorite writing corner.

  2. Grab a cup of coffee or tea and a notebook, laptop, tablet, typewriter or whatever you draft your writing on.

  3. Meet on Zoom for approximately one hour.

  4. Use my favorite method to give focus and structure to your writing.

  5. Stay silent.

  6. Work on whatever you like during the hour of writing—journaling, editing, chipping away at your WIP, drafting an angry email to your ex, writing fiction (who would know?), composing song lyrics, etc.

    1. An optional prompt will be provided if you need something to help get the creative juices flowing.
